Department of Malayalam is one of the prestigious departments in our college. It has a rich tradition. The post graduate course was started in 1993, and the department acquired the status of a research centre in 1998.
Prof. M.P. Manmadhan,the great social reformer and Gandhian philosopher was one of our prominent faculty members. Dr. A.R Gopala Pillai, eminent scholar and grammarian, Prof. Cherukunnam Purushothaman, well known scholar and poet, Prof. G. Gopalakrishnan Nair, a versatile genius, Dr. S.V. Venugopan Nair,the well-known short -story writer who won the Kerala Sahithya Academy award, were a few among the reputed members of the faculty, who all acted as the Heads of this Department.
Many of our teachers are well-known writers, academicians, research guides, award winners and media personalities.. One of our teachers Dr.N.Ajithkumar is doing Post Doctoral Research.
An active Alumni Association, which is functioning under the patronage of the famous poet Prof.V.Madhusoodhanan Nair, has been a source of inspiration for our department. T.P. Sasthamangalam, a popular critic, Pongummoodu Chandrasekharan Nair, Rtd. Principal, Sabloor Thomas, Journalist, are some of the active members who add cultural richness to the forum.
The department had organized a week long National Seminar, a couple of years back. It was attended by a large number of renowned personalities from Malayalam literature. In addition the Department organizes seminars and workshops with the approval and sponsorship of the UGC. The Dept conducts Ramayana Seminar in July (Karkkadakam) and Keralappiravi Seminar in November, every year.
Terminal Examinations and Test papers are conducted for all classes regularly. Assignments and discussions, special classes and enrichment programmes supplement the hours of teaching.
Innovative Teaching Methods.
Innovative-teaching methods are adopted by using Audio-visual aids. Documentaries on culture, folklore and literature are shown with the help of V.C.P and LCD projector. Dr. R.B. Rajalekshmi and Mr. K. Jyothish Kumar, the teachers of the Dept. coordinate these programmes. Dr.P.V. Vijayalekshmi and Dr. S. Rajeswari lead the innovative teaching of Linguistics and Grammar with the help of OHP.
Dr. R.B. Rajalekshmi, Reader in the faculty, imparts training classes in histrionics. P. Vijayalekshmi and Dr. Lalitha coordinate recitation training classes..Dr. K.S. Ravikumar trains students in writing good stories. Dr. B.Sudheendran Pillai, Head of the Department guides the members of the oratory / debate club. A Spiritual awareness club also functions in the Dept led by Mr. K. Reghunathan Nair, a faculty member.
Department library, attached to the General Library has a collection that exceeds 8000 books. Students are allowed to make full use of the books, journals and periodicals. Dr. R.B. Rajalekshmi supervises the Dept. library transactions.
